The Questions:

One: Reading on the couch or on the bed?

Definitely in bed. Even though I’ll often read on my lunch break at work or on a quiet evening, I find a book seems so much more rewarding t the end of a long day as you unwind.

Two: Male main character or female main character?

I honestly don’t generally have a preference, as I find I can identify with each other, but I suppose I’ll go for female, and I can generally learn more from a female perspective.

Three: Sweet snacks or salty snacks when reading?

Sweet, just seems more appropriate!

Four: Trilogies or quartets?

Trilogies, they just seem more circular and final, but I’ve had both good and bad experiences with both.

Five: First-person point of view or third-person point of view?

Third-person, because sometimes a first-person narration simply doesn’t sound like the character, and you really feel like it’s the writer’s voice. At worst, it can completely take you out of the fiction, and make characters think things they never realistically would.

Six: Reading at night or in the morning?

Again, at night. It would feel weird in the morning (except maybe at the weekend) as I’m not awake enough to read properly, and I never leave myself enough time in the morning for such luxuries!

Seven: Libraries or bookstores?

In principle, libraries, because I love the idea of anyone having access to a range of great books for next to nothing. However, I’m greedy and like to keep my books, so I’m going to have to say bookshop. There’s also an undeniable charm about browsing an old second-hand bookshop you can’t find in a library!

Eight: Books that make you laugh or books that make you cry?

Laugh, because it seems to be much harder to make someone laugh in prose for some reason. The funniest books I can think of off the top of my head are The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, Diary of a Nobody, and the essays of Woody Allen and Flann O’Brien. Apart from that, I don’t think there aren’t many others.

Nine: Black book covers or white book covers?

Definitely black, maybe because it reminds me of the night and feels cosier.

Ten: Character-driven or plot-driven stories?

Definitely character-driven. You can have a good plot, but if you don’t have believable characters, it’s very hard to be invested in it. Conversely, a book might not have much of a plot, but if the writer has created an interesting, well-rounded character, I don’t really mind, I have enough to be interested in.
